Jerome Berry left his wife and children in the early 1970s, during which Judith moved her family to Bedford’s largely white suburb of Cleveland.
Berry attended an almost all-white high school and was exposed to early discrimination as a result. Her early experiences of bigotry affected her drive for excellence.
The ambitious teen engaged in a dizzying variety of extracurricular events during high school, holding positions as editor of magazines, president of the class and head cheerleader.
A natural talent, during the early 1980s, Berry won a number of beauty-pageant titles including Miss Teen Ohio and Miss Teen America. Finally, she was crowned first runner-up in the 1985 competition for Miss U.S.A.
She attended Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland for a brief time where she studied broadcast journalism. However, before earning her degree, Berry discarded her dream of a career in news reporting.
Choosing to devote her time wholeheartedly to an entertainment career, Berry moved first to Chicago and then to New York City, where she found work as a catalogue model.
